ANN's Michael Maya Charles had to search around at EAA AirVenture 2014 to find this story.
The Aeroplane Factory building was one of the original exhibition halls back in the days before the term AirVenture was invented and it was simply referred to as The Oshkosh Fly-In. The Aeroplane factory is no longer a star exhibit Hall, but what Michael found inside was the soul of EAA.
If you could pinpoint a starting place for the formation of EAA you would find it a little airplane called the Baby Ace. Paul Poberezny acquired the rights to the Baby Ace design and published a full set of drawings in 3 issues of the Mechanics Illustrated Magazine in 1955. It could be said that this is the foundation upon which EAA was built.
Charles met with Kurt Mehre to ferret out the story of the replica of the original Mechanics Illustrated Baby Ace displayed at AirVenture 2014. It's a poignant story and Mehre and his EAA chapter took up the project only a few months before AirVenture 2014 and finished it in time in honor of Paul Poberezny.
In this video we learn a about the EAA history, and about what it took to finish this project that Paul had started 3 years ago. This is the story of a group of individuals who took it upon themselves to honor Paul by finishing his airplane.
