Vector Aerospace In The U.K. Suspends Apprenticeship Program

Has Taken On Apprentices Continuously For 75 Years

Vector Aerospace in Hampshire, U.K. has decided to not take on any new apprentices for the first time in 75 years.

The Hampshire Chronicle reports that the company made the decision after failing to secure a major contract for the upgrade of Chinook helicopters. They normally take on about 8 apprentices each year for a three-week work experience program, but that will not be the case in 2017.

Boeing Defense U.K. determined it would be more cost effective to carry out the modifications in house at its Fleetlands facility after a "long and detailed study" focused mainly on costs. A Vector spokesman also said about 60 of the company's 800 U.K. employees would be impacted by the decision.

The company is looking to increase its business in the civilian market.
