FAA Investigating Reported Near Miss Between A UAV And An Airliner

Report Came From Airliner Departing From Memphis International Airport

The FAA is investigating a report of a near miss between a drone and a Delta Airlines MD-88 flying about a mile south of Memphis International Airport.

Television station WREG reports that the pilot of Delta flight 2067 contacted air traffic controllers at about 1950 local time on August 7 to report a drone flying at about 1,700 feet.

The FAA would not provide any details about the reported incident, so it is not known how close the airliner might have come to the drone, if it was a drone at all. There have been reports in the past of UAVs near airport that have turned out to be other objects, such as a plastic grocery bag carried aloft by the wind.

The FAA receives about 100 such incident reports per month, according to the report. Delta also chose not to respond to a request for comment.
