Two Jailed For Trespassing At Area 51

Pair Was 'Searching' For The Secretive Base

Two Dutch nationals who said they were searching for Area 51 in Nevada were arrested last week and jailed for three days.

Fox News reports that the two have been identified as Govert Sweep, 21, and Ties Granzier, 20. Nye County Sheriff’s Deputies were deployed to the area on September 10 following up on reports of "foreign national trespassers" at the Nevada National Security Site. They found a car identified as belonging to the pair parked three miles into the site.

Sweep and Granzier said that they were able to read the signs warning against trespassing on the site, but they wanted to see the facility anyway. Granzier told the deputies that he is a YouTuber, and was carrying video and computer equipment, which he gave consent to search.

The pair entered guilty pleas to charges of trespassing and illegal parking, both misdemeanors. They were sentenced to one year in jail, but all but 10 days was suspended following the guilty plea. An additional 7 days will be suspended if each agrees to pay $2,280 in fines, meaning they will spend three days in jail. After serving that sentence, they will be returned to the Netherlands.

“It was important to us that these men serve jail time and pay a substantial financial penalty,” Nye County District Attorney Chris Arabia said in a video statement. “We take this crime seriously and people need to understand that we will not put up with this kind of nonsense.”
