Airborne-Unmanned 06.19.18: Mexican UAV Fights Crime, Spokane Drones, Ikhana!

A drone operated by authorities in Ensenada, Mexico, led to a significant decrease in overall crime in the city.

Ensenada police say that over a few months, their single DJI Inspire 1 drone has led to more than 500 arrests and contributed to an overall 10 percent drop in the crime rate, including a 30 percent drop in residential robberies. Over the past four months, the drone has flown an average of 25 sorties per day. The drone is deployed based on 911 call volume. It is operated from a centralized control room using software developed by Cape, a California-based company. The city of Spokane, WA will soon implement a program using a drone to assist in infrastructure inspections and construction projects. Local lawmakers approved the plan last week. Officials say using the aircraft will help the city complete projects more quickly while saving money for the taxpayers. NASA’s remotely-piloted Ikhana aircraft, based at the agency’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, CA, successfully flew its first mission in the National Airspace System without a safety chase aircraft last Tuesday. The FAA granted NASA special permission to conduct this flight under the authority of a Certificate of Waiver or Authorization. The flight took off from Edwards Air Force Base in California and entered controlled air space almost immediately. Ikhana flew into the Class-A airspace, where commercial airliners fly, just west of Edwards at an altitude of about 20,000 feet. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
