Capitol Gyrocopter Pilot Released From Prison

Doug Hughes Served Three Months Of His Four-Month Sentence

Doug Hughes is a free man. The former mailman who famously landed a gyrocopter on the Capitol lawn on April 15th, 2015 was released from the Federal Detention Center in Miami, FL Wednesday, his 62nd birthday.

Hughes was in good spirits, according to a report from the Tampa Bay Times. After arriving at his home in Ruskin, FL, he, his wife Alena and their daughter Kathy sat down to a meal of Kentucky Fried Chicken ... he said his first good meal since June.

Hughes reportedly spent his time in prison writing letters and creating speeches about campaign finance reform, which he practiced on other inmates. He said he spent a lot of time listening to NPR, and developing strategies for recruiting candidates for the 2018 mid-term election.

Hughes said his flight to the Capitol lawn was a way to protest money in politics. He had been carrying letters addressed to each of the 535 members of Congress outlining his grievances.

Last fall, he pleaded guilty to operating a gyrocopter without the proper airman certificate
