Man Fatally Injured Mowing A Grass Airstrip

Airplane Struck The Person While Landing

A 75-year-old man mowing a grass runway in Hollister, CA on a riding lawnmower was fatally injured when a plane arriving at the airport struck him while landing.

The accident occurred Thursday morning at Frazier Lake Airpark, according to the Free Lance newspaper. The airpark has a 2,500 foot grass runway surrounded by agricultural fields.

According to the San Benito County Sheriff's Office spokesman Eric Taylor, the pilot did not see the man on the riding lawnmower, who has not been identified, cutting the grass.

The pilot suffered only minor injuries in the accident. A second person on board the airplane suffered a head injury and was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital, according to the report.

A witness who was working on his plane at the airpark at the time of the accident said it was a "reasonable day to be flying, kind of overcast."
