Found: Wreckage Of US WWII Aircraft

Type As Yet Unknown

The wreckage of a US military aircraft from World War II has been unearthed in a river in northern Brazil, about 300 miles from an outpost established by the Army Air Corps during the war.

"We don't know yet exactly what kind of plane it is, but we can tell for sure that it's one used by the United States during World War II," archeologist Edinaldo Pinheiro told the Associated Press. Pinheiro, the director of a local museum, was on a dig some 1,700 miles north of Sao Paolo.

It's the kind of mystery that archeologists live for. Still to be discovered is not only the type of aircraft involved, but the identity and disposition of the crew, or the cause of the mishap.

It was the second known discovery of a US military aircraft in the jungles of South America since 1996, when an aircraft and the remains of the crew were found not far from the current crash site.
