A300 Forced Down By Iraqi Missile Fire

Three On Board, No One Hurt

A DHL Airbus A300 was hit by one or two shoulder-fired missiles Saturday as it took off from the heavily-guarded airport in Baghdad. The New York Times reports one of the A300s engines was hit and caught fire.

The pilot was able to get the aircraft back on the ground safely. None of the three crew members on board was hurt.

Military officials say there have been at least a dozen attempts to down civilian aircraft going into or leaving what was once Saddam Hussein International. This was the first time the shooters hit a civilian aircraft, though. Officials in Baghdad suggest this might delay the opening of Baghdad Airport to civilian passenger traffic, seen as a high-visibility indicator of stability in the war-torn country.

Since November 2nd, Iraqi insurgents have killed 39 Americans by downing their aircraft.
