Van Nuys Aviation Expo Raises $101K For Nonprofits

Donations to Benefit Many San Fernando Valley Youth Organizations

Van Nuys Airport's Aviation Expo 2003 raised a record $101,000 for local nonprofit youth and service organizations, shattering amounts generated in previous years. In unusually mild temperatures, more than 385,000 aviation enthusiasts turned out for the two-day celebration last weekend, making it the most-attended aviation event in the airport's 40-year history of air shows.

Commemorating the centennial of flight and the 75th anniversaries of both Van Nuys and Los Angeles International Airports, the show featured a full-scale replica of Orville and Wilbur Wright's historic biplane, the first aircraft to achieve sustained, powered flight. Other attractions included static displays and flyovers of celebrated military and vintage aircraft, aerial performances by world-renowned aerobatics pilots and much more.

Also, in partnership with the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, a nonprofit women pilots organization, Van Nuys Airport awarded $9,000 in scholarships to three students pursuing aviation careers.

"We're very grateful for the public's overwhelming response to Aviation Expo, the support of our sponsors and the tireless efforts of volunteers and staffers who made this our most successful air show ever," said Van Nuys Airport Manager Selena Birk. "Everyone's hard work and involvement has enabled Van Nuys Airport to give back to the community and directly benefit San Fernando Valley youth."

Expo proceeds will assist more than 20 nonprofit organizations, including such local high schools as Granada Hills, Monroe, Van Nuys, Taft and Kennedy, as well as Patrick Henry Middle School and Gault Street Elementary. Among others benefiting are several area Rotary and Optimist clubs, Mid Valley Chamber of Commerce, Civil Air Patrol, and Mid Valley Youth.
