Many Will Be Used For Needed Runway Repairs Around The Country

U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao recently announced that the FAA will award $185.8 million in airport infrastructure grants to 62 airports in 32 states across the United States as part of the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP).

“The Airport Improvement Program helps to maintain our aviation infrastructure and supports safety, capacity, security and environmental improvements,” said Secretary Chao (pictured).

The airport grant program funds various types of airport infrastructure projects, including runways, taxiways, and airport signage, lighting, and markings, all of which help to create thousands of jobs.
 
Airports are entitled to a certain amount of AIP funding each year, based on passenger volume. If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, then the FAA can supplement their entitlements with discretionary funding.

Those airports receiving discretionary grants are listed here, and a list of entitlement grant recipients can be found using the FMI link below:

• Wellington Municipal Airport in Wellington, KS, $2.1 million – funds will be used to extend Runway 17/35 by 1,000 feet to meet the operational needs of the airport.
• Missouri State Block Grant Program in Jefferson City, MO, $3.1 million – to rebuild a portion of the airport apron, (the aircraft parking area), at Sedalia Regional Airport. Grant funds will also repair part of the parallel taxiway at Fredericktown Regional Airport. As a participant in the State Block Grant Program, the state of Missouri administers AIP funds for general aviation airports in the state.
• Kearney Regional Airport in Kearney, NE, $10.1 million – grant funds will be used to reconstruct Runway 18/36 and each end of the parallel taxiway for the runway. This project is needed for Runway 18/36 to meet design standards.
• Millville Municipal Airport in Millville, NJ, $3.9 million – funds will be used to make repairs to Runway 10/28.
• Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield, IL, $3.4 million – the project will make critical repairs to the airport access road and service road used by aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles.
• Indianapolis International Airport in Indianapolis, IN, $6.4 million – grant funds will be used to repair and realign the Taxiway Connector C7, between Runway 5R/23L and Taxiway C.  The taxiway lighting also will be replaced.
• Ford Airport in Iron Mountain, MI, $4.2 million – funds will be used to repair Runway 1/19.
• Michigan State Block Grant Program in Lansing, MI, $4.9 million – the project will repair Runway 6/24 at the Oscoda Wurtsmith Airport. As a participant in the State Block Grant Program, the state of Michigan administers AIP funds for general aviation airports in the state.
• Redfield Municipal Airport in Redfield, SD, $6.1 million – grant funds will be used to build a new Runway 17/35, associated connecting taxiway, and lights.
• Brunswick Executive Airport in Brunswick, ME, $2 million – funds will be used to repair two hangar buildings.
• Burlington International Airport in Burlington, VT, $11.9 million – grant funds will be used to relocate Taxiway G to meet FAA design standards.
• Shively Field in Saratoga, WY, $2.8 million – funds will be used to repair Runway 5/23 and associated runway lighting.
• Lewiston-Nez Perce County Airport in Lewiston, ID, $2.5 million – the project will fund the construction of a new building for aircraft rescue and firefighting operations.
• Great Falls International Airport in Great Falls, MT, $5.2 million – the grant will fund the construction of Taxiway A4 and taxiway B4 to provide improved access to crosswind Runway 16/34.
• Omak Airport in Omak, WA, $1.3 million – grants funds will be used to repair Runway 17/35.
• Spartanburg Downtown Memorial Airport in Spartanburg, SC, $8.1 million – the project will repair and extend Runway 5/23.
• Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport in Jackson, MS, $4.5 million – grant funds will be used to repair Taxiway Alpha and connecting taxiways.
• San Angelo Regional/Mathis Field in San Angelo, TX, $3.1 million – the project will construct improvements to the taxiway system to enhance the safety of aircraft operations.
• San Antonio International Airport in San Antonio, TX, $6 million – funds will be used to sound insulate homes near the airport.
• Tyler Pounds Regional Airport in Tyler, TX, $10.1 million – grant funds will be used to repair Runway 4/22.
• Compton/Woodley Airport in Compton, CA, $5.8 million – funds will be used to repair Runway 7R/25L and the associated taxiway system.
• San Gabriel Valley Airport in El Monte, CA, $6 million – the grant will fund the repair of the general aviation apron where aircraft park.
• Los Angeles International Airport in Los Angeles, CA, $20 million – funds will be used to sound insulate homes near the airport.
• Glendale Municipal Airport in Glendale, AZ, $3.1 million – the grant will fund the repair of the north airport apron where aircraft park.
• Phoenix Goodyear Airport in Phoenix, AZ, $3 million – the grant will fund the repair of the south airport apron.

The FAA will issue AIP grants to the airports over the next several weeks in time to take advantage of the summer construction season. The grants will ensure the projects at these airports are either under construction or completed prior to the onset of the winter season.
