Classic Aero-TV: Eurocopter Eyes The Future - ‘X' Programs & More

Innovative Concepts From Eurocopter...

This time our ANN video crews caught up with Dr. Lutz Bertling, the President and CEO of Eurocopter as he was making a presentation describing Eurocopter products and their marketing plans. Their X program is showing some new and exciting steps forward. One of these is the hybrid helicopter that combines a lift rotor with forward thrust engines and a lifting wing.

Bertling says an all-electric helicopter is still in the future. However, they are experimenting with adding an electric power source as a backup for the standard turbine engine driven rotor system. This electric add-on would equate to a power assisted autorotation if the main engine fails. When Bertling starts talking about the new H4 model Eurocopter it’s obvious a major change is coming in the way helicopters operate.

This video shows the new hybrid helicopter in flight and provides graphics of the new H4. Even if you are not a whirlybird type person you’ll find the technology shown in this video to be fascinating. If you are a rotating wing pilot, dust off your wish-list.
