Blue Origin Conducts Ninth Test Flight Of New Shepard

Successfully Demonstrated The Crew Capsule Escape System

Blue Origin has completed the ninth test flight of its New Shepard rocket, successfully demonstrating its crew capsule escape system.

The booster launched at 10:11 a.m. CDT from the company's launch complex in west Texas. The crew capsule escape motor was fired after booster separation and propelled the capsule away from the booster. The capsule reached an apogee of 389,846 feet before returning to Earth under three parachutes.

The Verge reports that the capsule experienced up to 10 Gs during the escape system test. During the live webcast, Blue Origin host Ariane Cornell said that the acceleration was "well within what humans can take, especially for such a short spurt of time.”

The booster also landed safely after the flight. The mission lasted 11 minutes and 17 seconds.

The flight carried multiple payloads along with the human analog "Mannequin Skywalker". They included two developed by NASA, and a suite of payloads from Blue Origin employees as a part of the company's internal “Fly My Stuff” program.

Also on board were several scientific and medical items, textile materials being evaluated for future space suits and apparel, and other articles and experiments for Blue Origin's community partners.
