UAV At NYC Half-Marathon Causes Public Safety Swarm

Counter Terrorism Officials Question, Detain Operator

A quadcopter hovering near the finish line of the Manhattan half-marathon Sunday caused a scene that might have come out of the first Blues Brothers movie.

An unidentified young man was reportedly flying the quad near the end of the course, and the city responded to Pier 15 with about 10 members of the NYPD Counter Terrorism Unit, a police helicopter, and a boat from the NYPD's harbor unit.

The young man, who the New York Post reports was wearing a gray jacket with the word "grenade" written on it, was questioned by the police, frisked, and driven away in the back of an unmarked car.

One witness said that the man was about to walk away from the area when the police converged. The aircraft was carrying only a camera. It was not reported whether he will face any charges.
