Octogenarian Pilot Fatally Injured In Homebuilt Accident

Witnesses Said The Wings Just "Folded Up"

An 86-year-old pilot who reportedly was performing aerobatics in a homebuilt aircraft was fatally injured Wednesday when the wings on the plane "folded up" and the plane went down in a pasture in Weld County, Colorado.

The pilot has been identified as Jonathon Wenzel of Brighton, CO. The aircraft was not identified, but photos of the crash scene show a fabric delta wing and fuselage indicative of an ultralight.

The Tribune of Greely, CO reports that witnesses said the airplane was "about one-half to three-quarters of a mile in the air" when they saw the wings fold upwards and the airplane spiral into the ground. Witnesses described the plane as doing "backflips" before the accident occurred.

The Weld County Coroner said they would conduct an autopsy to determine if the pilot's age had anything to do with the crash, but "at this time, we believe it was an accident."
