Airborne 05.01.19: Propless Pitts, uAvionix Files 4 TSO, DeltaHawk

Also: P-51 Reunion for Oshkosh, Falcon 8X Record, Allegiant Dispatchers Union, Sunrise Air Ambulance

Up until recent memory, Spencer Suderman had fortune smile upon him repeatedly as he bested world records sought for sustained inverted spin events.

But a failed attempt a few weeks ago, due to oxygen issues, has been joined by an even more unwelcome problem when Suderman lost his prop, inflight, and was forced to execute an emergency landing in the notoriously difficult LA area at Whiteman Airport. Mind you, most Pitts Specials, even a modified S-1C like Suderman’s, are not the world greatest gliders... especially when the front of the cowling has messed up the aerodynamics as well as the aircraft's center of gravity. uAvionix, designer and manufacturer of the skyBeacon and tailBeacon EXP line of ADS-B OUT products for GA, has filed its TSO package for the tailBeacon with the FAA Aircraft Certification Office (ACO). The skyBeacon program has been extremely successful thus far and field reports have been quite positive.. So the anticipation for the tailBeacon has been high. The tailBeacon installation is designed to be extremely simple with only two wires and two screws, resulting in a 33 percent faster installation than skyBeacon (which has 3 of each). The patented uAvionix power transcoder ensures synchronization with existing Mode C or S transponders without additional wiring. Installation times on average are under one hour, including the required paperwork. After years of designing, refining and testing a new type of aviation engine that may find ready interest from the UAS industry, DeltaHawk Engines believes they’ll start producing and selling engines later this year. The company said the DeltaHawk engine design is pretty well finished, so now the company is doing testing and FAA certification, which they hope will be completed this fall. DeltaHawk’s DH180A4 will produce 180 hp at 2700 RPM, and produce 135 HP at 75% power. Cruise fuel consumption is estimated to be 7.4 GPH. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
