Italian WWII Fighter Pilot Found At Controls Of Crashed Airplane

Aircraft Went Down During A Battle Nearly 70 Years Ago

The wreckage of an Italian Macchi C.205 fighter plane has been found outside Pauda in northern Italy buried 13 feet underground with its pilot still at the controls.

The pilot was Lt. Guerrino Bortolani, according to Fox News. He was engaged in an aerial battle with Allied pilots when he went down, apparently hitting the ground with such force that the plane and pilot disappeared into the ground.

The crew that found the wreckage says that the site is now a cornfield. Bortolani was attempting to shoot down B-17s that were carrying more than 300 tons of bombs to be dropped on Italian targets. He was a member of a squadron led by renowned Italian ace Adriano Visconti.

Lt. Bortolani was reportedly found sitting on his closed parachute wearing a ring presented to him by a school for fighter pilots. He will reportedly be given a proper burial once relatives have been identified.
