CAF's Highland Lakes Squadron To Reopen Museum This Saturday

Displays Are Geared Toward Aviation And Combat Items

The Highland Lakes Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force is happy to note that they will reopen their museum on June 27, 2020.

The museum is located at the Burnet Municipal Airport 2302 S Water St, Burnet, TX 78611. The museum has some great artifacts. In the front grassy area historic military aircraft like the T-38, A-7, F100F jets are located. Visitors can step inside the museum where they will be able to see a tremendous amount of World War II memorabilia connected to the Greatest Generation. Most of the displays are geared toward aviation and combat items. The mission of the Commemorative Air Force is to educate, inspire, and honor through flight and living history experiences. When visiting the museum and hangar, you will see that The Highland Lakes Squadron embraces this mission.

The Highland Lakes Squadron Leader Dave Bonorden said “We are excited to reopen our museum to the general public. We want all of our visitors to know that we are remaining cognizant of the COVID-19 social distancing and safety guidelines. We are limiting the number of guests to ensure that social distancing standards are adhered to and we have implemented strict cleaning and disinfection protocols.”

Some of the museum’s highlights include a B-24 tail gunner turret, a Norden bombsight, a Link Trainer, uniforms, bomb shells, and hundreds of models of military vehicles, aircraft, weaponry, and vessels employed by the Greatest Generation. After perusing the museum, be sure to step out into the hangar where you will see a PT-19, L-17, and a SNJ (AT-6) aircraft. Some of these are aircraft are “mission ready” and others are being actively restored.

The Highland Lakes Squadron will soon add another important aircraft to its fleet, a C-47 Skytrain named Texas Zephyr. The C-47 (DC-3) cargo airplane is currently positioned in Brady, Texas awaiting some power plant upgrades. Texas Zephyr was recently donated by the late Carl Ritter.

Museum docents will be available during museum hours to provide tours and additional information on the museum’s artifacts and military history. Museum hours are Wednesday (1 -4 p.m.), Saturday (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.), and Sunday (1 – 4 p.m.).
