The myopic attempt to hobble or even kill off Section 336 may have other negative consequences than those already discussed.
AMA notes that, at this time, “...educators can use drones and model aircraft to teach STEM under Section 336 of the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012, also known as the Special Rule for Model Aircraft. This provision is critical for youth education because the only other way to legally fly is under the Small UAS Rule, which requires pilots to be at least 16 years old. Obviously, this does not work for young people. The Subcommittee on Aviation met today to explore issues related to the integration of new aircraft into the National Airspace System (NAS). The Subcommittee received testimony from representatives of the government and industry about a number of new vehicles that need accomodation to operate in the NAS -- and Unmanned aircraft were among those discussed. It’s hard to teach good sense... but here’s a possible object lesson to ponder. A drone that was flying over a bad traffic accident on I-75 in Bay County, MI was seized by police, and its operators may be
cited and fined. The accident involved multiple vehicles and caused a lengthy traffic backup. According to Sgt. John Richards with Michigan State Police, a husband and wife that were stuck in the backup deployed their drone to try to see what was going on. But the drone caused a delay in the arrival of a medical evacuation helicopter sent to evacuate one of the accident victims. They were interviewed by police on August 31. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of the AMA Drone Report!!!
