Korea To Develop Stealth UCAV By 2020

Unmanned Fighters Would Incorporate Advanced Artificial Intelligence

South Korea's Defense Ministry says it plans to develop a stealthy UCAV complete with an on-board "brain" by 2020. It's part of a program to update the South Korean arsenal, where defense officials plan to add new stealth technology to their air, sea and land capabilities.

Among the programs also announced in Seoul over the weekend was a program to develop an airborne warning and control (AWACS) system.

The stealth UCAV project would make South Korea a big player in the development of unmanned combat aircraft -- an undertaking that would put it on the heels of US efforts in that direction.

While the US has some UCAV capabilities -- most notably within the Predator series of drones (above) -- those capabilities are expected to be substantially increased next year, when the Boeing X-45A is slated to enter service.
