Classic Aero-TV: A Synonym For Joy - Mike Porter’s Stearman Restoration

A Peaceful Resurrection For A Valued Wartime Boeing PT-17

While at EAA AirVenture 2014, ANN Special Correspondent Michael Maya Charles had the opportunity to talk with a young man about his career in aircraft restoration.

While standing in front of a beautifully restored Stearman biplane, we find out that Mike Porter has restored more airplanes than seems possible for his age.

It turns out that Porter got his start very young in aviation because it was a business he was born into. His father was a commercial pilot that in the 1990s worked with a company that specialized in giving rides in World War II airplanes. Young Mike was bitten by the aviation bug and came down with a severe case of love for flying and working on airplanes. No cure for this has been found.

The Stearman that Porter is flying at Oshkosh is actually a wartime Boeing PT-17. Porter goes through the interesting story of researching the history of the airplane. As you look at this beautiful airplane you’ll hear the amazing story of its background and who flew it. It not only taught pilots how to fly during the war, but it had a very special mission.

Is this video a story about Mike Porter or about the Stearman? The answer to both is; yes. Sit back, relax, and let an interesting guy tell you a wonderful story about a great airplane.
