Clean Up On Aisle Six

Would The Owner Of The Cessna 150 Please Pick Up The Pieces And Go To Check-Out?

Who'd ever think to respond to a call for "clean-up on aisle six" with foam trucks and an ambulance? That's what pilots at Long Island's (NY) Republic Airport are worried about. New York Newsday reports the Stew Leonard's chain wants to build a 165,000 sq. ft. store at the end of Runway 14. That's inside the FAA protective zone, where aircraft fly as low as 100 feet AGL upon landing or take-off.

The idea has met with stiff resistance from the FAA. But the agency can do nothing to actually prevent construction.

The ultimate go- no-go decision will be up to the city leaders in Babylon (NY), who will vote on the issue later this month. As for the developers?

They say, if there were dangers in building so close to the runway, the airport should have bought the land as a safety measure. If approved, construction on the project will begin in the fall.
