India Launches Indigenous Aircraft Carrier

Project Intended To Protect Country Against Growing Chinese Influence

India has launched its first indigenous aircraft carrier, a move the government there says in intended to protect it against the growing influence of China in the region.

The French news service AFP reports that Defense Minister A.K. Anthony called the milestone "remarkable." His wife Elizabeth reportedly placed a garland on the hull of the 44,000-ton vessel to officially mark its launch.

The INS Vikrant was launched from a dry-dock facility in Kochi and pulled into the harbor by tugboats. It will be fitted with weapons and machinery over the next four years, and is expected to become fully operational in 2018.

Antony called the launch "just a first step in a long journey, but an important one." Defense experts expect the INS Vikrant will eventually be deployed in the Indian Ocean region. It is considered a major advance both in military projection and technological capability for India, which is competing with China for influence in Asia.
