Police Helicopters Damaged By Runaway Car

Baxter County AR Sheriff's Aircraft May Be Total Losses

Two helicopters belonging to the Baxter County, Arkansas Sheriff's Office may be total losses after being struck by a car that went over a wall and through a fence at the Sheriff's Office.

The driver of the car was 71-year-old Otis Avie, who was treated and released at the Baxter Regional Medical Center, according to a report appearing on the "First Arriving Network" website. A surveillance video from the Sheriff's office shows the car going airborne, careening through the fence and striking two aircraft ... one of them hard enough to push its tail boom down to the ground ... before coming to a stop on its roof.

There were reportedly three aircraft behind the fence, and two were badly damaged. The third reportedly suffered minor damage.

Sheriff John Montgomery told the Baxter Bulletin that while the department had paid $1,300 for the aircraft, they have a much higher value, and the damages could reach as high as $50,000.
