Hundreds Of O'Hare Workers To Strike November 29

Taking Part In National Effort Sponsored By 'Fight For $15'

Hundreds of workers at O'Hare International Airport plan to walk off the job for a day on November 29 as part of a national effort to have the federal minimum wage raised to $15 per hour.

The McClatchy news service reports that the group says the day of protest will be its most disruptive yet, but O'Hare is the only airport of the 20 taking part in the demonstration where workers will walk off their jobs.

The demonstration is expected to include about 500 baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors and wheelchair attendants that are employed by private contractors. They say their wages and working conditions are inadequate. The O'hare protest is being organized by the Service Employees International Union Local 1.

A representative of the baggage handlers said that the disruption was planned for after the Thanksgiving travel rush to prevent the alienation of holiday travelers, and hopefully garner their support for their cause.

Fight for $15 says that the election of Donald Trump as President represents an "extremist agenda to move the country to the right."
