Classic Aero-TV: Interacting With The Users - The FAA's Earl Lawrence

From 2017 (YouTube Version): Interacting With The Users In The Drone Community…

Earl Lawrence, director of the FAA's UAS Integration Office, had a goal at the FAA's UAS Symposium held earlier this year in Washington, D.C.; interact with the users. He told  ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell on the sidelines of the symposium that in that measure, the event was a resounding success.

The main issue for the FAA and the UAS community is collaboration, Lawrence said. "We're all looking to integrate UASs into the National Airspace ... safely ... and we really need to do it together. FAA doesn't have all the answers, industry doesn't have all the answers, but working together, we can get this new technology fielded into the national infrastructure."

Lawrence said that drone operators can get involved in a grass-roots level by doing such things as standing up a local safety committee and beginning the education process for local governments and the public. "It's really important for us to be able to reach out to folks that we know and trust that can help us."

Lawrence said that the manned aviation community is an integral part of incorporating UASs into the NAS safely. "We can't do it without them," he said, adding that the decisions make by individual drone operators on every flight are influencing the entire industry.
