Aero-TV: Profiles in Aviation – The Super Sky Cycle

Inventor Larry Neal Introduces the World’s First Flying Motorcycle

Larry Neal has come a long way since December 27th, 2005.  Just days after the first prototype test flights, Neal was awarded a patent for one of the most unique, innovative gyroplanes out there in the aviation world:  the Super Sky Cycle.  Four years later, Neal premiered the first production Super Sky Cycle to EAA AirVenture attendees.

Fully road-registered, the Super Sky Cycle is driven by a 912ULS 100-HP four-stroke engine that can reach 55 mph on the road and over 100 mph in the air.  Neal’s patented foldable rotor system allows for quick conversion, either for the road or easy storage in a standard 7-foot high garage, in the matter of minutes.

In addition, the Super Sky Cycle also features Neal’s patented G-Force Landing gear for short landings; with a parallelogram strut system and long stroke, the Super Sky Cycle is able to sustain a vertical descent of over 700’ without damage to the vehicle or injury to the pilot.

Located in the small town of Boyd, Texas, The Butterfly LLC has been selling kit gyroplanes for years.  Once the chief test pilot for Carter Copter, Neal has pursued his vision of building the world’s first “flying motorcyle,” since 1984.  Now 25 years later, he showcased the result at both EAA AirVenture and the 69th annual Sturgis Rally.
