Embraer Offering Factory-Installed Intelsat High-Speed WiFi

Multi-Orbit System First To Incorporate Electronically Steered Array Antenna

Embraer announced a finalized agreement with Intelsat to install its high-speed in-flight connectivity system on the E2 jets during production. The system gives passengers in flight streaming experiences similar to what their home networks provide.

The Intelsat system is the first multi-orbit satellite system to incorporate an ESA or electronically steered array antenna that gives better coverage, faster transmission speeds, and improved reliability.

Rob Baird, Director of OEM Programs at Intelsat said, “Intelsat is the first multi-orbit satellite inflight connectivity system with an electronically steered array (ESA) antenna to be installed at the Embraer factory, allowing passengers access to reliable, streaming connectivity starting immediately when aircraft enters revenue service. Passengers on Embraer E2 aircraft will soon enjoy the same high speed internet access from the clouds that they enjoy at home, thanks to our wide coverage and low latency.”

Martyn Holmes, CCO, Embraer Commercial Aviation said, “Factory-installation of the Intelsat ESA is a good example of how we’re making it easier for our customers to offer an improved passenger experience as soon as the aircraft is delivered. Reliable, high-speed connectivity is a key opportunity to significantly improve passengers’ onboard experience – helping to keep airlines competitive and their passengers productive and entertained in-flight.”

The Intelsat low-Earth orbit, or LEO, network has low latency and covers the entire globe including polar regions. The company’s GEO, or geosynchronous, network is best for more densely populated areas such as big cities. The ESA is lightweight and has a low profile that generates less drag than other designs, minimizing fuel consumption.
