Only 42 Percent Of Aircraft Flying In South Africa Are Certified Airworthy

Only 5,300 Have Current Airworthiness Certificates, According To Transport Ministry

Of the 12,500 aircraft listed on the South African Civil Aviation Authority flight register, only 5,300 have current airworthiness certificates, according to the Minister of Transport.

News24 in South Africa relays a report from the newspaper Die Burger indicating that the data comes from Minister of Transport Dipuo Peters, but which adds that the problem may lie with the ministry rather than scofflaw owners and pilots.

The executive director of the Commercial Aviation Association of South Africa Loen Dillman says that the CAA does not have the capacity to keep up with the number of out-of-compliance airplanes. The CAA has only 51 airworthiness inspectors, according to CAA spokesman Phindiwe Gwebu.

Dillman said that many aviation businesses in South Africa are considering moving their operations to neighboring Botswana or Namibia because South Africa's rules are so restrictive.
