Homeowner's Association Recommends Capturing UAVs

Residents Notified In Monthly Newsletter

A homeowners association in central Florida apparently is urging residents to capture any UAVs flying in the neighborhood and hold them to see who comes to the door.

Andrew Chan, who according to Facebook lives in Orlando, FL, posted a notice he received from his HOA on the "UAV Legal News & Discussion" public group on Facebook. In the notice, the writer, who is unnamed, said that "homeowners have seen drones hovering over their property taking pictures within 5-10 feet of their property."

They then assert that a property owner "owns a certain amount of airspace over your property."

Try taking THAT to the FAA.

The letter, which is pretty much entirely inaccurate, goes on to say that the local Sheriff (Orlando is in Orange County, FL, but that was not specified) said that "if a homeowner could capture the drone they could hang on to it and see who shows up at the front door to recover it."

So the Sheriff apparently is recommending stealing someone else's property.

Chan said in the Facebook post that as far as he knows, he is the only person in the neighborhood who owns a UAV ... and he never flies "within 5-10 feet" of anyone.
