Pilot Killed When Plane Went Down Near Johns Island Executive Airport

The 70-year-old pilot of a Kolb Mark III Xtra was killed Thursday morning when the plane went down about 1100 EDT near Johns Island Executive Airport. John Ratcliffe was the only person on board the plane.

FAA representative Robert Giguere told WCSC-TV that the plane had been observed "just practicing, circling the airport," when it went out of sight. He said airport personnel called 911 when the accident happened.

The plane reportedly went down in a marsh near the Stono River. NTSB officials are still removing the wreckage from the accident site, and have not given any indication about possible causes of the accident.

Local EAA chapter president Brett Grooms told the station that Ratcliffe had a real passion for flying. "This is a tragic loss for all of our chapter members," he said.
