Plum Island Airfield Gets New Operator

Plum Island Community Airfield, Inc., (PICA) has announced that Tim Campbell of Eagle East Aviation of Lawrence is the new licensed airport operator at the Plum Island Airfield in Newburyport. Eagle East is a full-service fixed base operator at Lawrence Municipal Airport, providing flight training, aircraft rentals, maintenance, and fuel sales. Eagle East will provide many of these services at Plum Island, but at a smaller scale consistent with the lower level of activity there.

PICA was founded in 2000 to ensure that this small airfield continues to operate and serve the local community, and to promote aviation history and education.

PICA has leased the field from the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA) since July of 2001. Both PICA and Eagle East plan to be active participants in the nationwide Centennial of Flight celebration this year, highlighting Plum Island¹s role as the birthplace of aviation in New England.
