Two Fatally Injured In CO Helicopter Accident

Rotor Blades Observed Several Feet From The Main Wreckage

A helicopter reported to be an Enstrom 280FX went down Monday afternoon at Erie Municipal Airport near Boulder City, CO, resulting in the fatal injury of the two people on board.

KUSA-TV reports that the information about the type of aircraft and number of people on board was provided by FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer. He referred other questions to local authorities.

The station reports that its ENG helicopter flew over the accident scene shortly after it occurred, and that some part of the aircraft, including rotor blades, were observed "several feet" from the main wreckage.

Air traffic inbound to Erie Municipal was diverted to Longmont Airport while the initial investigation took place.

A photo posted by the station shows the main wreckage of the aircraft lying in the grass just next to runway 15, with what appear to be rotor blades on the pavement.

The Denver Post reports that, according to a witness who said she saw the accident from her deck, the aircraft seemed to be heading for her house before it impacted the ground and exploded.
