Water Retention Pond Near Boeing's SC Plant Has A Familiar Shape

But Engineers Say The 'Plane Pond' Is The Result Of Serendipity

It didn't start out to look like an airplane, but engineers building a water retention pond near Boeing's North Charleston, SC assembly facility said that when the unique features of the 20 acre stormwater runoff collection pond started looking like an airplane, they just went with it.

The result is being called the "plane pond," and visitors departing from or arriving at Charleston airport get the best view of the feature from the air.

The Post and Courier newspaper reports that the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control requires baffling for stormwater coming into a retention pond. And as it was being built, engineers realized it kind of looked like an airplane. Now, it looks a LOT like an airplane.

However Boeing spokesman Robert Gross told the Post and Courier newspaper that it will be unique to the North Charleston facility. "We don't have any plans for similar features elsewhere on Boeing property," he said.
