The Evolution of Award-Winning 330SC Commences
Extra Aircraft unveiled the company’s brand-new 330SX during the morning of Oshkosh Day 1. This ceremony was conducted by CEO and Founder Walter Extra’s son, Marcus Extra.
The company was founded in 1980 as a one-man show. It has since exponentially grown in size and popularity, manufacturing a total of 850 aerobatic aircraft. Extra continues to surprise and surpass expectations, and is widely considered to be one of the industry’s most successful producers.
In 2008, Extra launched the 330SC, which has since won 10 World Championships for single-seaters. It is a low-wing aerobatic monoplane with a carbon-fiber wing design, a carbon composite empennage, a three-blade Talon propeller, and conventional taildragger landing gear. This aircraft has been the poster child of Extra Aircraft, providing incredible performance and easy maneuverability.
However, there may be a new Extra star on the rise. The Extra 330SX, an evolution of the 330SC, has very recently rolled off the production line. Less than 10 have reached the market so far, and 2 of them are on display at this year’s Oshkosh AirVenture outside the International Aerobatic Club.
The 330SX includes several upgrades from the previous model. It has updated avionics, including a Garmin G3X touch panel and a Trig Avionics transponder. Extra also notes that it has more effective ailerons, improving its overall maneuverability. The most significant change, however, is the cockpit itself. The engine was shifted to provide a more comfortable space for the pilot, an adaptation that occurred after Marcus “outgrew” the previous size. When speaking with Extra about the new model, it was clear that he held high expectations. He is confident that “the 330SX will be the next world champion,” and believes it gives pilots a clear edge over others in competition flying.
