Aero-TV: Exploring the Never-Ending Hartzell Props Lineup

Showcasing Hartzell’s General Aviation Impact Through the Oshkosh Fly-Ins

When you look at a plane for the first time, the first thing that catches your eye might not be the shiny metal blades sticking off the nose. However, if you take a closer look, oftentimes what you’ll see is the mark of a general aviation legend: Hartzell Propeller.

The company has been around since the beginning, with roots tracing back to a partnership with the Wright Brothers in 1914. This relationship created Hartzell’s guiding principle: “Built on Honor.” Even today, this phrase remains atop the company’s logo and on each of the nearly 4,000 propellers it delivers each year.

While Hartzell propellers are best known for their use in smaller birds like Cessnas and Pipers, the manufacturer offers more than 400 blade designs suited to anything from ultralights to large turboprops. With the EAA’s Oshkosh Airventure drawing in thousands of aircraft of all shapes and sizes, visitors truly have the chance to see how immense Hartzell’s presence in aviation has become.

Hartzell’s collection features both aluminum and composite propellers, compatible with piston and turboprop-powered aircraft with 2-6-blade hubs. These designs have been standard or optional equipment on Cessna models, like the 182, 210, and 208 Caravan, as well as the Piper Cherokee, Mooney M20C, Beechcraft King Air 350, and more.

One of the prop maker’s more recent partnerships is with Daher. Its 5-blade composite propellers are factory-installed on the TBM 960 and Kodiak 900 and available for retrofits with the TBM 850 and Kodiak 100.
