Airborne 06.03.19: Stratolaunch ShutDown?, Burt Rutan To Osh19, Air Race Classic

Also: Deciphering GAMA's 2019 Q1 Report, Embry-Riddle Flight Team, Apollo 11 Brooch, Air Cargo

Media reports continue to predict the demise of the Stratolaunch Systems program shepherded by the late Paul Allen.

That could mean that the massive Stratolaunch mothership, once destined to carry rockets into optimal positions and altitudes for launches may have made its first and last flight... much like Howard Hughes’ iconic Spruce Goose of decades past. The Stratolaunch aircraft was built to enable airline-style access to space that could have been convenient, affordable and routine. The reinforced center wing can support multiple launch vehicles, weighing up to a total of 500,000 pounds. Renowned aerospace engineer and aircraft designer Burt Rutan will be celebrated at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019 this July with a number of presentations and Rutan-designed airplanes on display. Burt, the founder of two innovative aerospace companies, Rutan Aircraft Factory and Scaled Composites, has developed 48 research aircraft throughout his lengthy career, is a member of both the International Air & Space Hall of Fame and National Aviation Hall of Fame, and has been the co-recipient of the Collier Trophy on two separate occasions. The field is set for the 43rd Air Race Classic (ARC), the annual all-women cross-country airplane race. Fifty-one teams, consisting of 113 women pilots from across the United States and around the world, will take off Tuesday, June 18 from Jackson, Tennessee, for a 2,538-mile international competition that ends Friday, June 21 in Welland, Ontario. The oldest race of its kind in the nation, the Air Race Classic traces its roots to the 1929 Women's Air Derby, aka the Powder Puff Derby, in which Amelia Earhart and 19 other daring female pilots raced from Santa Monica, California, to Cleveland, Ohio. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
