CAF Will Bring C-47 and R4D Normandy Vets to Salis Museum in June
This June, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) is bringing two significant pieces of World War II aviation history to the Salis Museum in France for an exceptional event commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The aircraft, the C-47 "That's All, Brother" and the R4D "Ready 4 Duty," will be part of a larger exhibit organized by the Salis Flying Museum, the D-Day Squadron, and the French Wing of the CAF.
Scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, 2024, the event allows the public to explore these historic aircraft closely. Admission is set at 19€, providing an affordable opportunity for history enthusiasts and the general public to engage with a pivotal piece of World War II history.
"That's All, Brother," the aircraft famous for leading the first wave of the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, has been meticulously restored to its wartime configuration. After its significant role in 2019 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the aircraft will return from the CAF Central Texas Wing in San Marcos, Texas, to mark the 80th anniversary.
The R4D "Ready 4 Duty," a naval variant of the C-47, has an equally storied past. Adapted to transport depth charges, it served across the globe with the U.S. Navy Atlantic Special Service Squadron. Notably, in February 1945, it participated in a mission that successfully sank a German U-boat off the coast of Brazil. The aircraft is currently stationed with the CAF Dallas/Fort Worth Wing in Lancaster, Texas.
These historic aircraft, along with others like the Douglas C-47 "Placid Lassie," will be showcased, offering a tangible link to the past and honoring the brave efforts of those involved in the D-Day operations. This event not only serves as an educational experience but also as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made during one of the most crucial periods of modern history.
