Arrest Made After Man Crashes Truck Into Airplane At Van Nuys

Airplane Was Parked At The Time Of The Incident

A man who officials said appeared "disoriented" rammed through a gate at Van Nuys Airport in California Friday morning and crashed his pickup truck into a parked airplane.

The Los Angeles Daily News reports incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. local time. In a statement, Los Angeles World Airport, which operates Van Nuys, said that he "drove his blue pickup truck in a westerly direction to the east access road where he was seen by air traffic control staff in the tower.” When confronted by airport personnel, he put the truck into reverse and backed into a parked Mooney airplane.

Ortega was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of two felony counts of vandalism and one of trespassing onto an airfield.

One plane on final approach was diverted while the situation was handled. The runways were later inspected and reopened.
