Don't Look For Amazon Drones In Your Neighborhood Soon

Analyst Jonathan Rupprecht Points Out The Reasons Why

One of the "holy grails" of the UAV world is delivery of goods by autonomous aircraft directly to the consumer's door. And Amazon recently demonstrated the technology in the U.K., sparking a lot of buzz about when drones might be crisscrossing neighborhoods with packages.

Well, certainly not in time for this Christmas, and likely not for several Christmases to come.

According to drone attorney Jonathan Rupprecht, the package delivery part is not that difficult. But the legal hurdles are very high.

Rupprecht says that privacy is not likely one of the issues that will slow drone package delivery.

So what will? According to Rupprecht, there are three primary areas:

  • The FAA's part 107 does not allow air carrier operations;
  • To date, there has been no section 333 exemption for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operation granted by the FAA; and
  • The mishmash of drone regulations being passed by states, cities, towns and other government bodies.

The bottom line is, according to Rupprecht, Amazon has a "long way to go" before you'll be getting your packages dropped at your door by a drone. So the UPS and FedEx guys can breathe a tad easier, at least for now.
