General Atomics Snags Dutch Contract for More MQ-9As

While Long in the Tooth, the MQ-9A Remains a Contender in the Military UAV Market

General Atomics made a sale to the Royal Netherlands Air Force, inking a deal to double the number of aircraft destined to join the country.

The sale will add another 4 aircraft, bringing the total to 8 in all. The first bolus of new MQ-9s was delivered last year, accompanied by their ground control terminals. The aircraft were quickly pressed into service with the RNLAF, who evidently found them a good fit for their patrol and ISR missions. The MQ-9As sport a 27-hour endurance, 240-kt top speed, and 40,000 foot ceiling while hauling around almost 4,000 lbs of payload (much of it externally mounted).

“We are doubling the number of MQ-9A Reapers so we can increase our maritime and overland intelligence, reconnaissance, surveillance (ISR) capacity,” said Lieutenant-Colonel Jan Ruedisueli, commander of the RNLAF’s 306 squadron. “The MQ-9As will receive external pods for Electronic Intelligence, a communications relay, a Maritime Radar, and also be armed in the future.”
