Projected Low-Cost Alternative With Advanced Capabilities

Vast, the Long Beach, California, -based space habitation technology company, unveiled Haven-2, its proposed successor to the International Space Station (ISS) at the 75th International Astronautical Congress being held in Milan, Italy.

NASA is planning to retire the ISS by 2030 and has begun its Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destination (CLD) program. The agency anticipates selecting its Phase 2 winners in 2026, and Vast is determined to secure this prestigious contract to build the successor to the ISS.

To do this, Vast has designed and developed Haven-2 to offer the most competitive solution. Haven-2 is designed as an extension of the size and capabilities of its first iteration, Haven-1, which the company intends to launch in 2025 aboard the SpaceX Dragon, as the first commercial space station. Vast will precede Haven-1 with Haven Demo as an uncrewed in-space testbed for the hardware and software that will support the crew on Haven-1.

Haven-1 will have a crew of 4 and will be the single-module test version that will precede the longer Haven-2, which will leverage the same systems proven in its predecessor.

Max Haot, Vast CEO explained, “Our focus this decade is to win the NASA Commercial LEO Destination (CLD) contract and build the successor to the International Space Station. To achieve this, we will first demonstrate our capability by building and operating the world’s first commercial space station, Haven-1, which is set to launch in 2025.”
