Airliner Down In China, 48 Rescued

91 People Were On Board The Henan Airlines Flight

A Chinese regional airliner with 91 people aboard went down during a landing attempt Tuesday night (lcoal time) after overshooting the runway at Yichun city. 48 people have reportedly been rescued, with 20 of those hospitalized.

China's official Xinhua News Agency reports that the accident occurred in Heilongjiang province. The plane had reportedly taken off from the provincial capital of Harbin just before 2100 local time, and crashed while attempting to land just over an hour later.

It is not clear if there are more survivors. The New York Post reports that the airline flies mostly smaller regional jets on short haul routes in an attempt to compete with the inter-city high-speed rail network that has been pushed aggressively by the Chinese government. It was previously known as Kunpeng Airlines, but was re-launched under the new name earlier this year.
