'Home-Built' Danish Rocket Makes Successful Unmanned Flight

Co-Designer Still Hopes To Fly The Single-Person Suborbital Spacecraft

After three years in development and one unsuccessful launch attempt, a rocket built by two Danish inventors has made a successful unmanned test flight.

Copenhagen Suborbitals Group had hoped the rocket would achieve an altitude of about 9 miles, but it was unclear if that objective was reached. The launch was made from a launch pad built on a barge off the island of Bornholm on Friday at 1632 local time.

Former NASA employee Kristian von Bengtsson, one of the HEAT1X-Tycho Brahe designers, told reporters after the launch that "(i)t is a success that we got the rocket off the ground, and I believe that we have written a bit of history."

The French news service AFP reports that co-designer Peter Madsen still hopes to be able to fly the rocket on a suborbital mission in the near future. He said he would wait until there were three or four "problem free" flights before he would attempt to become the first Dane in space.
