Union Votes No On Onex

Company Will Go Ahead With Boeing Plant Purchase

Two days after machinists at Boeing's commercial plants in Kansas and Oklahoma voted down a contract offer from Onex, the Canadian company vowed to complete its purchase of the facilities.

Onex General Manager Nigel Wright told a news conference Thursday the company will makes an offer directly to the workers, bypassing union leadership. Workers who bypass the union will be offered wages will be the same as in Onex's last offer and the company will offer a 401K retirement plan. But there will be no equity sharing and no union pension.

Wright said there will be no further offers from Onex to unionized machinists -- at least, until after the plant transaction with Boeing is complete.

The Wichita Eagle reports Onex will continue to negotiate with SPEEA and the IBEW, the two other unions representing workers at plants in Wichita, Tulsa and McAlester.

And if the other unions also turn down the company's offer? Wright said, regardless, "sale's on," according to the Eagle.
