FAA May Issue Red Card To Rhoades Aviation

FAA Gives Honolulu’s Rhoades Aviation 15 Days To Respond To Enforcement Notice Amid Alleged Safety Violations

Earlier this week, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) proposed revoking the air carrier certificate of Honolulu-based Rhoades Aviation Inc, citing numerous alleged safety violations, and gave them 15 days to respond to the enforcement notice.

Rhoades Aviation does business as TransAir and has been grounded by the FAA in the past.

In a nutshell, the enforcement notice sent by the FAA alleges that Rhoades: 1) failed to maintain Safety Management System (SMS) records, 2) operated two Boeing 737s more than 900 times without adding it to the maintenance program, 3) operated a Boeing 737 airplane on 33 flights when it was not airworthy, 4) committed numerous violations of its SMS, 5) improperly conducted maintenance, and 6) improperly documented maintenance.

To the alleged violations of its FAA-required SMS program, the FAA alleged that Rhoades failed to ensure that the program was properly implemented and performing in all areas of its organization. Improper maintenance/recording of said maintenance referenced work performed on an engine compressor’s fan blades and Rhoades’ failure to properly document the work.

Failure to maintain SMS records alleged Rhoades had issues with its general operations and administration manuals, did not conduct proper safety risk management when addressing discrepancies in its aircraft loading, weight and balance, and runway analysis manuals.
