Apollo 11 Commemorative Brooch Up For Sale

Had Been Worn By Janet Armstrong, Neil Armstrong's Wife

A gold brooch presented to Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong and worn by his wife is being offered for sale.

The brooch, which is made of 18 carat gold, is one of four struck following the historic first manned moon mission. The others were presented to Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and Rose Kennedy.

Fox News reports that the piece is being offered by M.S. Rau Antiques. It is shaped to resemble the lunar surface with a diamond at the spot where the Eagle lunar lander touched down. There are also five rubies surrounding the diamond showing where the astronauts walked on the moon.

The reverse of the brooch has Neil Armstrong's name and the date of the landing.

The piece, which comes with a letter of provenance from the Armstrong Family Collection, carries a price of $168,500. It was worn by Janet Armstrong during the "Giant Leap" worldwide goodwill tour taken by the astronauts and their wives from Sept. 29 to Nov. 5, 1969. Mrs. Armstrong was photographed wearing the brooch while meeting with Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Andrew at Buckingham Palace in October, 1969.
