FAA Investigating Ignored Emergency Landing Call

United Express Pilot Reported Smoke In The Cockpit

The FAA is investigating an incident which occurred last Tuesday in which a United Express pilot requested an emergency landing after reporting smoke in the cockpit, but the controller dismissed as a prank.

The Denver International Airport air traffic controller apparently misunderstood the flight's identification and dismissed the declaration of an emergency. The Associated Press reports that controllers realized the mistake when the pilot radioed the tower again, saying that the plane had landed and passengers were being evacuated. Firefighters were dispatched to the airplane at that time, and put out a fire in the instrument panel of the airplane.

One person was taken to a local hospital and treated for unspecified injuries. The airline had no comment.
