Space Florida 5th Annual ‘Egg-Drop’ Competition Winners Announced

25 Florida Teams Participated In Palm Bay Event

Space Florida, the state’s spaceport authority and aerospace development organization, is pleased to announce the winners of the 5th Annual Planetary Lander Egg-Drop Competition, held at Palm Bay Magnet High School Saturday, May 3rd.

Twenty-five teams of Florida K-12 students built 10x10x12-inch “planetary landers” that delivered a raw egg “payload” 20 feet to the ground – similar to how a real lander would deliver a payload on the Moon, Mars or an asteroid. All landers were judged for creativity, shock-absorbing materials, décor and design to keep the landers upright in free fall and after impact, and most importantly for delivering the payload safely with the maximum points rewarded for not breaking the egg.
 
The winners included:
 
Best in Show (Voted by all teams): “WMSS Space Dragons” from West Melbourne School for Science in Brevard County

Elementary School Division (K-4)

  • 1st Place “ZeroG” Team from Lithia Springs Elementary (Hillsborough County)
  • 2nd Place “The Awesome Asteroids” (Scrambled Eggs) from Hunter’s Green Elementary in Hillsborough County
  • 3rd Place “Lake City Landers” from Summers Elementary School in Columbia County

Middle School Division (5-8)

  • 1st Place “Eggstronauts” from Sabal Point Elementary School in Seminole County
  • 2nd Place Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences
  • 3rd Place “Eggs”traordinary Brainiacs from Chestnut Elementary in Osceola County

High School Division (9-12)

  • 1st Place “Cougars Pride” from Durant High School in Hillsborough County
  • 2nd Place “Flying Conchs” from Key West High School in Monroe County
  • 3rd Place “Egg-straterrestrial Landers” from Palm Bay Magnet High School in Brevard County

Most Creative (Judges Pick): “Eggstronauts” from Sabal Point Elementary School in Seminole County
 
 
Prizes were provided by NanoRacks, SpaceX and XCOR Aerospace, and additional giveaways were provided by Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company and NASA-KSC Education Division.
 
The Annual Egg Drop Competition was developed by Space Florida to promote student interest in aerospace science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
