Ultralight Plane Crash Claims Pilot's Life in Australia

Sapphire Single-Engine Goes Down At Cohuna Airport

The investigation of Saturday's crash that killed the 72-year old pilot of an ultralight plane at Australia's Cohuna Airport continued Sunday.

A Victoria Police media spokeswoman said witnesses saw the plane circling over the airport around noon, as if the pilot was no longer in control, reported the Australian Associated Press.

The unidentified pilot was found dead in the wreckage of the Sapphire single-seater, which crashed about 1:30 pm local time. According to reports, the pilot was on the way to the Narromine ultralight show.

Held annually, the National Ultra-Light Fly-In Festival (NATFLY) takes place every Easter weekend in Narromine, 280 miles west of Sydney.

In another incident Friday, a Tasmanian man walked away after his ultralight plane crash-landed near Devonport, in northern Tasmania.

The Australian newspaper reports the pilot was coming into land when the plane experienced engine failure, clipped a fence, and crashed into a field shortly after midday.

The male pilot sustained only a minor scratch to his head.
